Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Exercisehttp://carrcellularfitness.com/products/l-arginine

What Does it Mean to Train?

The primary long term response that muscles make to increasing metabolic demands is to increase the number of mitochondria, the energy factories in each cell. This mitochondrial biogenesis occurs when exercise-induced cellular stress activates a substance known as  PGC-1alpha. This very important signal causes  reproduction of mitochondria, thus allowing the athlete to increase endurance and exercise performance. Mice with mutations allowing their cells to produce large amounts of PGC-1alpha become the Rich Fronings of the mice world, with little effort or training.

Another very important cellular messenger  that stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis is nitric oxide (NO), produced when L-arginine combines with oxygen. NO production is increased dramatically in exercising muscle, resulting in increase blood flow by relaxing the smooth muscle in arteries. NO also has been shown to directly stimulate glucose uptake into muscle, the primary fuel burned during intense exercise. NO  has also been shown to be a direct and potent stimulator of PGC-1 alpha, the signal that causes more mitochondria to be synthesized.

In summary, when you train many things happen to improve your performance, but the most important adaptation, especially with endurance training (for example, running 100 meters or more) is increasing the number of mitochondria, a process facilitated by L-arginine.

I like to keep my patients' Vitamin D in the top third of the "normal" range. This, and many other studies, are validating the health benefits of this very important hormone, Vitamin D. The amount of vitamin D you take should be based on lab testing. If you are unable to get your vitamin D level checked, I recommend 5000 units daily (one of our capsules daily ) until you can get your levels checked. I like to keep most of my patients Vitamin D levels between 70-100, depending on their needs and other conditions.

Inflammation

Inflammation

Hey you guys.  I've been posting a lot about performance supplements, heavy lifting, showing off some cool gymnastics stuff and oly lifts. Recently, I've started following a high volume CrossFit training program by Invictus. I am BEAT UP. While I'll continue to intake supplements and eat correctly to meet the demands I'm placing on my body at the cellular level for performance, I personally forget and recently haven't emphasized the importance on what we can take to reduce inflammation.  2 things;

FISH OIL, a supplement we are all familiar with, and less commonly thought about is TURMERIC. Here are some key points in choosing which supplements to buy. First, you want to make sure your fish oil is molecularly distilled. This  removes toxins during the capsulation process. This is extremely important because if our fish oil contains toxins, it will be counterproductive in the reason we are taking it, to reduce inflammation. 2nd tip, we want our turmeric to be standardized to contain 95% Curcumin, less than this will not be sufficient to have benefits.

A daily recommended dose for these 2 supplements are 850mg of EPA/600mg DHA fish oil and minimally 3,000mg of turmeric.  We carry a product by Ortho Molecular called "InflammaBLOX" in the office, which meets these criteria guidelines.

Why We Use Medical Grade Raw Materials

We take an integrative approach to optimizing our health and performance, appreciating  that our body systems all work together and are affected by the food we eat, the toxins we encounter and the stress we face. And, of course, the aging process. Appropriate supplementation plays a major role in the success of our patients and athletes.  The  purpose of this post is to outline some key factors in choosing which supplements you should use to optimize your health and performance as well as demonstrate the importance of using medical grade supplements.

The choice of  raw materials we use to formulate our supplements is based on their effectiveness to improve our patients health and optimize levels supported by appropriate lab testing.  Our  supplements are chosen based on their purity, proven efficacy, and the years of experience working with our manufacturers. The products we choose are formulated to be safe and effective in order to enhance  our patients’ health as well as performance for those wishing to reach a new goal or compete in athletics.

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 ("DSHEA"), is a 1994 statute of United States Federal legislation which defines and regulates dietary supplements. Since it was enacted, this statute makes the supplement market mainly unregulated, without proof of effectiveness or safety needed to market a supplement, as well as dietary supplements being classified as foods instead of as drugs.

The British Medical Journal Medicine published a study on herbal supplements, showing that most  studied were of low quality, and up to a third did not contain the herb claimed at all.  Another  third of those studied contained unlisted substances.

In the US, the FDA estimates that 70% of the companies do not follow basic quality standards. In a recent 2013 study of Vitamin D by the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers  tested Vitamin D pills sold in stores found they contained from 9% to 140% of the doses listed on the labels.  Though none of the pills was likely to be dangerous, (in this case) some contained too little of the vitamin to effectively treat the deficiency.

Our committed team of athletes, nutrition experts, and  medical doctor all play a role in researching companies to ensure our products are of the highest potency, using the best  US Pharmacopeia raw materials used whenever possible.  These materials are tested both in house by the manufacturer and using 3rd party validation.  Carr Cellular Fitness and Performance stands behind our Physician Certified seal to ensure the purity of high quality raw materials, label claims, and efficacy meet physician standards.

We just purchased and received our brand new InBody analyzer, the InBody 570!

Carr Cellular Fitness is excited to announce we have just purchased one of the most sophisticated body analyzers available, and the only one available in our area! The InBody 570 by BioSpace measures not only total body fat, lean body mass, segmental lean body mass, and intracellular and extracellular water, but this latest upgrade now directly measures visceral fat, which surrounds and invades our internal organs.  Unlike other body impedance analyzers, the InBody uses only impedance directly acquired from each subject rather than relying on empirical estimations based on the averages of statistical data. To see how this advanced technology can help you, contact Jason at Carr Cellular Fitness.

Cost: $20.00 per analysis
